Can headphones improve focus?

Yes — through three independent mechanisms. ANC reduces auditory distraction (well-established, passive benefit). Binaural beats at alpha and beta frequencies show moderate meta-analytic evidence for attention enhancement (Garcia-Argibay et al., g = 0.40–0.45). tDCS shows a small but real effect on executive function during concurrent work (Dedoncker et al., 2016, d ≈ 0.3). Sychedelic combines all three in a sequenced, HRV-gated protocol.

Why does the sequence matter — audio first, then tDCS?

Pre-task binaural beat exposure shows stronger effects than concurrent listening (Garcia-Argibay, 2019). tDCS requires concurrent cognitive engagement to produce benefit (Mancuso, 2016). And tDCS outcomes are state-dependent — applying stimulation from a stressed or overloaded baseline reduces effects (Gbadeyan, 2019). The Read–Prime–Stimulate sequence addresses all three constraints in order.

Can tDCS improve working memory?

Conditionally yes — when concurrent with cognitive tasks. Mancuso et al. (2016) confirmed tDCS alone without an active task shows no reliable benefit. Under concurrent conditions, Dedoncker et al. (2016) found d ≈ 0.3–0.4 on reaction time across 61 studies. Multi-session protocols with adaptive training produce more durable gains. Approximately 30–40% of individuals may not respond at the population average.
